Wine of the Week!
Santa Margherita Pinot Grigio Trentina-Alto Adige 2006 $18
Well, we’re ready with our pick for Wine of the Week. It’s one you probably know, and hopefully love: Santa Margherita 2006 Pinot Grigio.
It’s the wine that put Pinot Grigio on the map and is consistently a top choice when it comes to this delightfully refreshing varietal.
Summer is the ideal time to enjoy Pinot Grigio and our choice offers all the tangy fruitiness and mouth-pleasing texture that matches it up perfectly with so many warm weather foods, from cold, crispy salads to fresh prosciutto and melon to jumbo shrimp or a bucket of steamer clams at the beach!
What a fun wine to have on hand!
Santa Margherita is light yellow, just like a summer morning, with crispy flavors that make it such an easy wine to enjoy. There’s no oaky taste, and the good acidity is why the word that best describes how it finishes is “clean.”
Santa Margherita Pinot Grigio is eighteen to twenty dollars most places.

Winemakers notes and comments:
Simple and fruity, with lemon and apple character, light body and a clean, fresh finish.
In 1961, the Santa Margherita oenologist had what proved to be a brilliant idea. He decided to try the white vinification technique used for the production of French Champagne on the best Pinot Grigio grapes from Trentino-Alto Adige. This led to the creation of an innovative white wine which, with its fresh aroma and silky taste, created a new fashion in white wine drinking. This wine has since continued to gain in popularity both in Italy and abroad, maintaining a clear leadership in the Pinot Grigio D.O.C. category.
Santa Margherita was the first company to vinify the pinkish Pinot Grigio grapes as white wine. The must is not left on the skins to avoid its acquiring their rust-red color. After soft-pressing the must is left to ferment 15-20 days at 18°-20°C. The wine is then stored at 15°-16°C. in special stainless-steel tanks until bottling.
Tasting notes:
This dry white wine is pale straw-yellow in color. The clean, intense aroma and dry flavour with pleasant golden apple aftertaste make Santa Margherita Pinot Grigio a wine of great character and versatility.
Culinary suggestions:
Excellent as an aperitif, ideal accompaniment to seafood salads and fish- and shellfish-based pasta and rice courses. Perfect with white meats and boiled or grilled fish and with soufflés.
Past Recommendations, Picks, and Wines of the Week
Notes on our Wines of the Week, Recommendations, and Picks:
When you read our thoughts,
please remember that you may think differently. A particular wine
may be your favorite and not on our list. Well, don't stop buying
it because of that. In fact, you may want to email
us and let us know about it. These are our opinions but our
FIRST recommendation is to go by your own palate.
A couple of other thoughts . . . first, prices
are approximate. They'll vary. Second, different vintages mean
different grapes and different tastes so our recommendation for
a 2000 Merlot may not hold for 2001.
And lastly, we remind you to drink responsibly!
Now, all that said, here is a summary of links to our suggestions.
